NJN/am for Friday, October 5

Friday! Shout hallelujah! Unless you’re at work already…

Weather: Nice today, then... It will be a beautiful, warm day once some patchy fog goes away. Highs will reach the middle 60s, with nighttime lows in the upper 50s. On Saturday for Warrior Dash, the day will start off cool and cloudy, with some scattered showers possible after lunch, with highs in the upper 70s and nighttime lows in the upper 40s. From Sunday on it will be noticeably cooler with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s, maybe even upper 30s Sunday night.

Dash like a warrior tomorrow. The nation’s biggest series of extreme running events makes its debut in Alabama Saturday, as the Warrior dash comes to The Hitchin Post in Kimberly. More than 8,000 runners, along with at least as many spectators, will descend on the town for the day-long event. Parking will be available ($20) at Kimberly City Park, North Jefferson Middle School and Mortimer Jordan High School with shuttles available; no parking for spectators will be allowed at The Hitchin Post. No parking will be available along the roads leading to the site or in adjacent subdivisions, and police will strictly enforce this. Admission for spectators is free. The first wave of racers go off at 8 a.m.

Suspected drug dealer arrested. Gardendale Police have arrested Arthur Melvin Leslie, 52, at a home in the 1200 block of Mt. Olive Ave. after finding crystal meth, Lortab, Valium and other paraphernalia in the home. Leslie is lodged in the county jail on four drug-related counts, with bond set at $75,000.

Sports: High school football time! It’s another full slate of games tonight at 7 p.m. The NJN Big Game features Huffman at Gardendale on homecoming night. Plus there’s Mortimer Jordan at Moody, Hayden at Walker, Oak Grove at Corner, Pleasant Valley at Fultondale and Tabernacle Christian at North River Christian in Northport… Baseball: It’s Wild Card Day in the majors, with Atlanta hosting St. Louis at 4 p.m. and Baltimore at Texas right after that. The winners each move on to the Division Series… After one miserable year as skipper, Bobby Valentine was fired by the Boston Red Sox. Valentine’s team went 69-93 this season.
