Good Thursday morning to you — and Happy Birthday to our “boss lady”...
Weather: Dry, but not for long. It’s the first day in more than a week where there hasn’t been some chance of rain in the forecast, but that respite will be short-lived. For today, it will be sunny and warm but not terribly humid, with highs in the upper 80s. Lows tonight will get down into the upper 60s. Fair skies will be the norm on Friday, but scattered showers return Friday night.
And the royal baby’s name is... George Alexander Louis, as announced by his parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton. The first name George was the betting favorite by the British bookmaking giant Ladbrokes, which paid winners at 5-2 odds — £2.50 for every pound sterling wagered. If he ascends to the British throne (he’s third in line behind Prince Charles and Prince William) and keeps his name there, he would become King George VII; his great-great-grandfather was George VI, who reigned during World War II.
Here comes Dorian. The fourth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season is heading across the ocean toward the Caribbean. It’s way too early to tell if, when or where the tropical storm will make landfall, but its arrival is several days away.
Sports: Ouch. Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Tim Hudson is likely out for the rest of the regular season, after a terrific performance in an 8-2 win over the New York Mets. Hudson broke his ankle as he was covering first base, as runner Eric Young Jr. stepped on Hudson’s foot in quick-developing play. He will undergo surgery back in Atlanta after the swelling goes down. He could possibly return in time for the post-season, which appears to be where the Braves are headed after increasing their lead at the top of the NL East standings to eight games… NFL: New England coach Bill Belichick always acts as if he would rather have a root canal than give a press conference. But when he talked to the media about the murder charges against the Patriots’ Aaron Hernandez on Wednesday, he was genuinely hurt and concerned about those affected. "It's a sad day; really a sad day on so many levels," Belichick said… Soccer: The U.S. will play against Panama in the championship match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, thanks to a 3-1 win over Honduras in Dallas. Landon Donovan, who had taken a break from national-team play earlier this year, was in top form as he scored two goals and assisted on the third. The finals will be Sunday in Chicago.
