Updated: Speeding a factor in crash on Ala. 79 that injures three

NORTH JEFFERSON — A head-on crash has injured three people and tied up traffic on Alabama 79 between Pinson and Locust Fork.

The crash occurred near 3:30 p.m., not far from the Jefferson-Blount county line and close to Masseyline Church.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, three vehicles were involved. One car traveling northbound was speeding and struck the rear of another car. The speeding car lost control and crossed into the other lane, striking a southbound pickup truck head on. The car's occupants both had to be extracted from the passenger compartment.

The driver of the speeding car was was taken by Life Saver helicopter with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The other passenger as well as the pickup driver were both taken away by ambulance, also with injuries that were not life threatening. The driver of the car that was struck from behind was not injured and refused treatment.

Sheriff's deputies and Palmerdale Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.

Witnesses originally reported that Highway 79 was blocked, but the Sheriff's Office reported at 4:45 that the road was open, though traffic was moving slowly. Motorists headed north to Locust Fork, County Line and Trafford may want to seek alternate routes this evening.
