A robbery suspect who escaped from a Roebuck hospital has finally been caught, after being turned in by his mother.
Deandrea Miles, 19, of Birmingham was taken into custody at about 1 a.m. this morning, still wearing the hospital gown and handcuffs that he had on when he escaped from St. Vincent's East Hospital on Sunday afternoon. Miles sprang out of a wheelchair as he was being released from the hospital and ran into the nearby woods.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's canine units, SWAT team and Air Support Unit conducted a manhunt for Miles all afternoon, but came up empty and called off the search at about 8 p.m., according to Chief Deputy Randy Christian. But detectives and the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force kept following leads, and finally met with Miles' mother to arrange an arrest should he show up at home. Intsead, Miles' mother went to pick him up elsewhere.
After investigators tracked the mother down, they instructed her to turn Miles over to police or face arrest herself. She then drove him to the Birmingham Police East Precinct.
Miles was originally charged with first degree robbery, after he allegedly broke into a home in the 100 block of Jupiter Drive on Friday. The homeowner shot Miles, who was then taken to the hospital after being caught.
Charges of first degree escape have been added, and Miles is lodged in the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $120,000 bond.
