GARDENDALE — Guess what — it’s Thursday already…
Weather: Rain sneaking back in. Mostly sunny skies will be the rule of the day, but scattered showers and thunderstorms will creep back in tonight. Highs today will be in the lower 80s and lows tonight in the lower 60s with a 20 percent chance of rain this evening. Rain chances are better on Friday and Saturday.
Not thrilled. New Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Stephen Nowlin is not keen on the idea of Gardendale breaking away to form its own city school system. In an interview with The North Jefferson News that took place in April (part of a continuing series of stories), Nowlin reminded residents: “You may have more money if you raise sufficient taxes, but you also become responsible if there’s any growth and you have to build new schools, and the city has to pay for them with bonds.” The full article is found here.
First casualty of IRS scandal. President Obama announced Wednesday evening that Steven Miller, the acting director of the Internal Revenue Service, has resigned, though subsequent reports noted that Miller was due to step down in the next few weeks in any event because of limitations on the length of his interim position. The resignation did little to silence the calls from Republicans for independent investigations into the IRS, which announced last week that its inspector general had discovered that Tea Party and other conservative groups had received unfair scrutiny when applying for tax-exempt status.
Deadly tornadoes in Texas. At least six people were killed Wednesday night when several tornadoes struck in and around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. One tornado did great damage in the city of Granbury, where more than a dozen people are not accounted for.
