NJN/am for Wednesday, May 15

It’s Wednesday, and the future course of schools in Gardendale may have started today…

“You have an exceptional opportunity.” So said Dr. Ira Harvey on Tuesday night as he presented the findings of his study of the feasibility of Gardendale forming its own school system. Harvey presented his city-funded report to a large crowd at the Civic Center exhibition hall. He told the crowd and the city council that Gardendale could indeed support its own school system, even if Mt. Olive decided not to annex itself into the city and be a part. We have three items of interest about last night that you should click on:

See ‘ya (in jail), Bubba. Gardendale Police have arrested an Empire man they believe robbed a local jeweler. Kevin Curtis Campbell, 21, is accused of stealing necklaces from Gardendale Jewelers last week, saying “See ‘ya, bubba” as he ran out the door. Campbell is being transferred to the county jail on $15,000 bond.

The IRS and — Billy Graham? As the scandal widens into accusations that the Internal Revenue Service was heavy-handed with conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status, now comes word that the agency was also giving the renowned evangelist a hard time as well. Graham’s son Franklin, who heads the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and the Samaritan’s Purse disaster-relief group, told Politico.com that he believes the IRS was also targeting those groups because the Grahams asked supporters to “candidates who base their decisions on biblical principles and support the nation of Israel” in the last election. The Obama administration is facing scathing criticism from all sides of the political spectrum over admissions that the IRS put Tea Party-associated groups under extreme scrutiny.
