NJN/am for Tuesday, January 15

Good Tuesday morning, and no, you didn’t see an ark floating by…

Weather: Fit for neither man nor beast. The rain goes on and on, so much so that the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the metro Birmingham area, and a flood warning for the Locust Fork of the Warrior River at Sayre. Otherwise, rain continues throughout the day, with temperatures staying around the 40s today and tonight. The rain will finally taper off Wednesday.

Convenience store robbers caught. Gardendale Police and Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies caught a pair of men two days after they robbed the Cross Roads Convenience Store near Corner. The store owner was robbed Friday night, and then saw the same two men come into the store again Sunday night, apparently with robbery on their mind again. They fled instead, and the owner got a license tag number. Not long afterward, the pair was stopped on Fieldstown Road and arrested; they confessed later. Jarrod Kellum, 27, of Empire and Zakhary Somerset, 22, of Fultondale are in jail in lieu of bond.

A big mess. That’s what a burglar left in the office of Fultondale High principal Dr. Stephanie Robinson, after he broke into the school late Friday night. The burglar took a small amount of cash and ransacked her office, and also did damage in a handful of other classrooms. Surveillance video indicates the intruder was male and about 5-foot-7 with a slim build.

Greer services today. Lisa Greer, the wife of Gardendale-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church pastor Dr. Terry Greer, will be laid to rest today in Scottsboro. Lisa Greer died from gunshot wounds suffered in an attack Thursday afternoon at the church parsonage. Police have charged her husband with the killing, as well as the attempted murder of their daughter, Suzanna.

Sports: Wildcats, Yellow Jackets split. Fultondale took a 43-36 overtime win over visiting Corner in girls basketball action Monday night, but the Yellow Jacket boys won their contest over the Wildcats by a 62-52 score. Austin Sanford led the Jackets with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Corner hosts Curry tonight, while Fultondale makes the trip to Vincent. Elsewhere, Gardendale swept Tarrant’s girls and boys Monday night. Tonight, it’s a full slate of games, but only Corner plays at home; Gardendale plays at Hueytown… Cycling: Lance Armstrong has confessed to Oprah Winfrey that he took performance-enhancing drugs to win the Tour de France multiple times, a source told the Associated Press. In the interview, which will be shown by Winfrey’s cable network Thursday, Armstrong admits to charges that had been leveled against him by the sport’s regulators, which had resulted in a lifetime ban and the stripping of his Tour titles.
