FULTONDALE — Two people found dead in a car in Fultondale recently have been identified as a couple from Odenville.

On Jan. 4, law enforcement officers found the bodies of Billy Ray Kay, 71, and Billy Jean Kay, 55, near the intersection of Carson Road and New Castle Road.

On Jan. 3, family members reported the couple missing in St. Clair County, according to Fultondale Police Lt. Phillip Mangina. A St. Clair Sheriff’s deputy backtracked the couple’s route to Fultondale, where they had visited relatives on Dec. 20.

The deputy found the car about 100 feet off of the road, where it was not visible to passers-by or to workers at a nearby company.

Investigators think the driver, Billy Ray Kay, ran the stop sign as he was apparently driving south on New Castle Road. It is unknown why he failed to stop the truck, which rolled down an embankment, overturned and struck a tree.

Billy Jean Kay was ejected from the truck, and Billy Ray Kay was pinned inside, according to Mangina. It is not known how long the couple was at the accident site before their bodies were discovered, but he said it appeared to be at least a week.

It is also not known if a medical or other condition was the cause of the car accident.

A spokesman with the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s office said it will be a few more weeks before his office can determine the cause of death and other details of the case.
