Gardendale to let historical society move into former North Jefferson News building

GARDENDALE — The Gardendale Historical Society is getting a seventh-birthday present from the city — a new home.

The City Council passed a resolution in Monday's meeting to give the society a building that's located on the grounds of the Gardendale Civic Center. The building was the home of The North Jefferson News for many years, and has stood vacant since the NJN moved to offices in The Garden shopping center farther north on Main Street, across a parking lot from the current office.

City workers are connecting the old NJN building to the sewer system. No date has been set for the society to take possession of the building.

Monday's meeting was moved up from its usual evening schedule so that it could be held at Gardendale High School, where students could observe a live council session. The time was also changed to avoid conflicts with tonight's BCS Championship football game between Alabama and Notre Dame.
