BIRMINGHAM — The suspect in the shooting of an off-duty Birmingham Police officer at his Pinson home has surrendered to authorities.
Andre Devon Morgan, 33, of Birmingham turned himself in at the Jefferson County Jail on Tuesday afternoon, according to Sgt. Jack Self of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
Morgan is charged with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling, after sheriff's investigators say he shot BPD officer Silburn Smith three times in the front door of Silburn's house. Investigators believe there was a dispute over Morgan's estranged wife, who was in Smith's house at the time.
Smith was taken to UAB Hospital, where he is recovering from gunshot wounds to his hand, back and lower body. A BPD spokesman said Smith is in stable condition and is expected to recover.
The shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. Monday night.
Morgan's bond is set at $175,000.
