NJN/am for Wednesday, February 19

Good Wednesday morning to you...

Weather: Unseasonably warm. High temperatures will reach the lower 70s today with a 20 percent chance of showers today and tonight. Lows tonight will be in the upper 50s. Thursday will be warm during the day as well, leading to a possible outbreak of severe thunderstorms Thursday night along a strong cold front. Strong straight-line winds and isolated tornadoes are possible late tomorrow night.

Lowery: We're not flipping off the switch. Fultondale Mayor Jim Lowery, who is also the superintendent of the city-owned Fultondale Gas Board, said Tuesday that the board will continue to provide customers in Gardendale with natural gas as it has since 1959. Lowery said he had fielded numerous calls from nervous consumers after the Gardendale City Council authorized Mayor Othell Phillips to request proposals from other suppliers. That move was in response to a letter from the gas board, signed by Lowery, which stated that their franchise agreement would not be renewed and would expire on April 1.

...But I will kill my mother first.” That's what Mark Byron McAvoy, 42, is reported to have told police during a standoff Sunday just north of Gardendale, in which he allegedly used his mother as a human shield. Investigators say McAvoy went to a neighbor's house with bloody hands, telling them that he killed his mother, then went back to his house and barricaded himself in. It took a SWAT team and tear gas to flush him out and get his mother to safety. McAvoy is charged with kidnapping and four other related counts.

Sports: Split decision. Mortimer Jordan split a baseball doubleheader at Springville on Tuesday, winning the opener 7-2 but losing the nightcap 1-0. Third baseman Nathan Stover was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored in the first game, with Dylan Burgett picking up the win with four innings of two-hit relief. The Tigers' Alex Foster drove in the only run in the second contest.
