NORTH JEFFERSON — Editor's note: This update corrects a former version of the article, which mistakenly stated that most residents at a recent public hearing wanted Phillilps Drive to be re-opened. In fact, a show of hands requested by Mayor Othell Phillips showed that the vast majority of those at the hearing want the road permanently closed.
Phillips Drive in Gardendale is temporarily opened.
The Gardendale City Council held a public hearing in July to gather comments from Phillips Drive residents, most of whom wanted the road closed following the construction of a Dollar General store at Phillips Drive and Fieldstown Road.
Other residents want the road opened permanently.
Mayor Othell Phillips said the city council will make a decision about the road during an upcoming meeting; he did not say which meeting.
In the meantime, a sign at the exit of Dollar General’s parking lot directs traffic to make a left turn only, in an attempt to keep increased traffic off of Phillips Drive.
