NJN/am for Tuesday, June 26

Good Tuesday morning to you…

Weather: Sizzling. The high temperatures keep right on going, though it will be slightly cooler today and tomorrow — if you can call 94 slightly cooler. Lows tonight and tomorrow night will be around the 70 mark. The sky-high temps return Thursday, and by the weekend we could see highs at or above 100.

Traffic: Now work that will cause any delays anywhere around here, says ALDOT.

At last, a park. Ever since the New Castle community was annexed into Gardendale around the turn of the millennium, residents there have pressured the city to put in a park. On Monday, their wish got a lot closer to reality, as city officials officially broke ground on a new park to be located along New Castle Road near Mulberry Road. The park will be on property adjacent to the CSX railroad line. Actual construction starts July 9, with completion scheduled within 90 days.

SCOTUS ruling on immigration law: a mixed bag. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned some parts of a controversial Arizona law that cracks down on illegal immigration, but let stand a key provision that allows law enforcement officers to check the immigration status of someone they have detained for some other reason. How that will affect Alabama’s very-similar law remains to be seen; but the court did leave the door open for the ruling to be reconsidered once the law actually takes effect in Arizona. The court’s highly-anticipated ruling on Obamacare was not handed down Monday, but will be on Thursday, the last day of the court’s current term.

Sports: No three-peat for South Carolina. Arizona broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth inning with three runs, then held the two-time defending champion gamecocks without a run despite having the bases loaded with one out to win the NCAA College World Series in Omaha…. Tennis: For the first time in her career, five-time Wimbledon ladies’ champion Venus Williams was knocked out in the very first round on Monday. Williams, who continues to struggle with her comeback after battling a debilitating auto-immune disease, lost in straight sets to Elena Vesnina. Gentlemen’s play begins today.
