Time to prepare for North End Council's 62nd annual garden show

GARDENDALE — Some garden enthusiasts are gearing up for one of the longest-running events in north Jefferson County.

The North End Council of Garden Clubs is hosting its 62nd annual flower show April 18-19 at the Gardendale Civic Center.

Even though the show is a month and a half away, it is not too early for participants to get busy. The public is invited to enter container-grown plants and other horticulture into the show for judging. There is no fee to enter.

There is also a division for youth of all ages to enter horticulture items that they grew, according to show chairman Judy Burton.

The design category is a competition for garden club members only.

The theme of this year’s flower show is “America! America!” The event is dedicated to all military veterans, according to Burton.

A color guard will present the colors during the show’s opening ceremony, where local dignitaries will be invited.

Plants to be judged are accepted April 17, and the show is open to the public April 18-19.  There is no fee to attend the flower show, which is open to the public.

The North End Council is a member of Federated Garden Clubs of District 3; the Garden Club of Alabama Inc., Deep South Region; and National Garden Clubs Inc.

This year’s show is dedicated to Bernice Cash, a member of the Blue Star Garden Club who died earlier this year.

The North End Council of Garden Clubs is made up of five clubs: Blue Star, Dixie Gardeners, Garden Dale, Magnolia and Twin Oaks.

For more information about the show, call Burton at 631-2895 or North End Council President Margie Thomas at 631-6992.
