It’s Friday, and not getting off to a good start…
Weather: Rough stuff. There’s a chance of severe thunderstorms today, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds, but the chance of tornadoes is almost nil — summertime weather patterns simply don’t favor tornado formation. The storms will be scattered, with highs around 90 in areas that see more sun than clouds, and a rain chance of 60 percent. Lows tonight will be in the lower 70s, with more storms possible. The rain will become a little less widespread over the weekend.
Mass murder at Colorado movie theater. A gunman killed at least 14 people and wounded dozens more as he opened fire inside a crowded cinema in Aurora, Colo. The packed multiplex, viewing a midnight showing of the new Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises,” tried to flee as the gunman first spread some sort of gas, then fired from in front of the theater. The suspect was caught behind the multiplex; he’s identified as James Holes, 24. The death toll tops that of the infamous 1999 Columbine High School massacre 15 miles away, in which 12 students were killed.
No progress in manhunt. Police and FBI investigators said Thursday they are “still investigating” the hold-up at a bank in Morris. They have released images from a surveillance video which shows two men, one wearing a hoodie, as they robbed the Peoples Bank branch on Wednesday.
Birmingham board takes a day off. The Birmingham Board of Education canceled the Thursday continuation of its Tuesday meeting, during which it voted to fire Supt. Craig Witherspoon. That move was immediately overturned by the state, which assumed control of the board last month, but Witherspoon had to seek a court order to get access to his old office. The meeting is now scheduled for Tuesday.
Sports: Saban in the center ring. For someone whose disdain for the circus that is the SEC Media Days has been just short of obvious, Alabama coach Nick Saban somehow always figures out how to make news there. At the 2012 edition in Hoover Thursday, Saban suggested a radio host that Penn State might add a surcharge to football tickets to cover potential damages to victims of sexual abuse by former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Questioned about that later in the main press room, Saban backtracked on the idea somewhat…. Golf: Australia’s Adam Scott is the leader after the first round of The Open Championship at Royal Lytham, shooting a 6-under 64. Tiger Woods is tied with Bubba Watson and Rory McIlroy in sixth place, three shots back.… Basketball: The USA men’s team made short work of the host team from Great Britain in an Olympic warm-up, winning 118-78 at Manchester…. Baseball: The Braves defeated the Giants 3-2 in a Thursday afternoon game. Atlanta is nine games over the .500 mark, chasing Washington in the National League East.
