— Good Wednesday morning to you…
Weather: Improving. You may see patchy fog this morning, but eventually skies will clear and we’ll see highs in the upper 80s. Lows tonight will dip to the upper 60s. Thursday’s highs will be around 90.
Sixth graders on the move. The Jefferson County Board of Education made it official on Tuesday — sixth grade classes will move from Fultondale Elementary School to Fultondale High. Four classes will move to the high school, and will be kept separate from the seventh grades and higher. Principals of both schools said parents will be given the details in the coming days. Officials said this is a stopgap measure, as enrollment is also increasing at the high school; Superintendent Dr. Stephen Nowlin said the system will have to take more action in three years, but they’ll have to consider any effects of a possible breakaway from a proposed Gardendale city school system.
“Failing schools” named. The Alabama Department of Education issued its list of 78 schools considered to be failing according to the new Alabama Accountability Act. The Birmingham City Schools system had 11 failing schools, but Jefferson County had two, including Center point High School. The law provides for parents of students in failing schools to transfer to other public schools or get a credit on their state income taxes to cover private school tuition.
Sports: They’re still alive. The Miami Heat staged a late comeback in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, led by LeBron James and his triple-double as they defeated San Antonio 103-100 in overtime. Ray Allen hit a 3-pointer late in regulation time to send the game into an extra five minutes. The championship will be determined Thursday night at Miami… Soccer: The United States all but locked up a berth in next year’s FIFA World Cup on Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Honduras in their six-team qualifying tournament. Joey Altidore scored in the 73rd minute on a crossing pass from Fabian Johnson. The Americans sit atop the standings, with the top three teams moving on to Cup play in Brazil.
