Weather: Improving. You still may run into a stray drizzle this morning, but those should be gone by afternoon. Highs today may not get out of the 70s, with tonight’s low down around 53ighs today may n. Wednesday should be sunny with a high of 76.
Gardendale to ponder its own school system. The city may go the way of Trussville and Alabaster, splitting off from the county schools to form its own system. A group of residents convinced the Gardendale City Council to approve a feasibility study for a new system at Monday night’s regular session. One possible roadblock is Mt. Olive Elementary, which feeds into Bragg Middle and Gardendale High but lies outside the city limits; a new system might require annexation for that school to be included. We’ll have more details on this later today at njeffersonnews.com and in Wednesday’s North Jefferson News.
Superintendent search narrowed. The Jefferson County Board of Education moved Monday morning to narrow the field of candidates for superintendent from five to three, and in doing so eliminated Gardendale resident Dr. Julie Hannah from consideration. Hannah, currently the director of student learning for the Alabama Department of Education and a former interim deputy superintendent for JefCoEd, was the only candidate interviewed who had ties to the system. The remaining candidates: Karyle Green, superintendent of the East Allen County system near Fort Wayne, Ind.; Dale Robbins, the retired associate superintendent of the Gwinett County system in suburban Atlanta; and Stephen Nowlin, superintendent of Lee County schools in Opelika.
Three dead in crash. Suspects in a robbery in Walker County led police on a high-speed chase that ended with their car running into another in the Sherman Heights neighborhood near Ensley Monday night, killing a man, woman and toddler. The crash happened when the suspects ran a red light at Birmingport Road and Minor Parkway. The suspects then fled the scene and remained at large as of 2 a.m. (A television news report last night erroneously indicated the crash occurred in Fultondale.)
Sports: Nat-urally. The Washington Nationals won their first National League East pennant despite a loss to the Phillies, thanks to the Braves’ 2-1 loss to Pittsburgh. Atlanta will host the NL Wild Card game Friday, probably against the Cardinals but maybe the Dodgers… NFL: Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo coughed up five interceptions, two of them returned for touchdowns — including a memorable rumble by linebacker Lance Briggs — as the Bears blasted Dallas 34-18 on Monday Night Football.
