NJN/am for Monday, October 1

It’s Monday all over again …

Weather: Could get rough. There’s an outside chance of severe thunderstorms this morning as unstable, moist air is pumped up from the Gulf. A small tornado or two is possible, but heavy rain is more likely. The bad weather will move into Georgia later in the day. Highs will be in the upper 70s, with lows tonight in the lower 60s. Rain diminishes Tuesday, with a high around 72.

Something missing on your doorstep? If your edition of The Birmingham News isn’t there today — or is replaced by a booklet about its website — don’t call the paper boy. Today is the first day of the News’ new thrice-weekly print publication schedule; the paper will publish only on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. It’s the first time since the 1881 founding of The Daily Birmingham Age, a predecessor of the now-defunct Post-Herald, that metro Birmingham has been without a daily newspaper. Birmingham is now the second-largest city in the nation to not have a daily newspaper of its own; New Orleans, whose Times-Picayune went through the same changes today, is the largest. Advance Publications papers in Huntsville and Mobile were also cut back. The Montgomery Advertiser is now the largest-circulation daily in the state.

Superintendent choice could come today. The Jefferson County Board of Education may announce its choice for its next superintendent today. Five candidates, including Gardendale’s Dr. Julie Hannah, are in the running to replace the retiring Dr. Phil Hammonds. The board will meet in special session beginning at 9 a.m. today; we’ll have full coverage from the Central Office.

Sports: Epic fail. If you’re a fan of European golf, it was the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history. If you’re an American fan, it was the biggest choke. The United States team, up by a 10-6 score after Saturday’s alternate-shot foursomes, needed to win just four out of 12 Sunday singles matches and tie another to retain the most prestigious team golf trophy in the world. But the Euros — wearing silhouettes of the late Spanish champion Seve Ballesteros on their shirts — came storming back on the Medinah Club course in Chicago. Justin Rose all but sealed the win when he holed a 35-foot birdie putt on the 17th to put him ahead of Phil Mickelson, then Martin Kaymer sank a short par putt to beat Steve Stricker and take back the cup. Stricker and Tiger Woods were both winless in their matches over the three days… College football: Alabama is the unanimous choice as the top team in the Associated Press poll this week. LSU fell to fourth, Georgia fifth and South Carolina sixth; the latter two tangle this weekend… Baseball: The Braves gave Chipper Jones something to celebrate in his last regular-season home game Sunday, as they defeated the Mets 6-2. Kris Medlen pitched the win; it’s the 23rd straight time Atlanta has won a game Medlen started, a team record. Jones will likely play at Turner Field again, in the National League wild card game Friday.
