“Mel, kiss my grits!” said Florence Jean Castleberry in the old TV show, “Alice.” Now that phrase has carried on everywhere, including a new cafe opening in Hayden.
Kiss My Grits Cafe opened on May 14 as a business that not only serves coffee but also catering and delivery service.
“I can do birthday cakes, baskets, whatever you want,” said Tonya Carson, the owner of Kiss My Grits.
Carson has a culinary degree from Wallace State, according to her website.
The cafe serves three kinds of sandwiches: Roast beef, ham and turkey with cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, mustard and mayonnaise. It also has a nostalgic feel to it, taking the name from the 70s and 80s sitcom, “Alice.”
As a catering service, Kiss My Grits also specializes in desserts for special occasions. The staff at the cafe can deliver orders. Delivery is free to locations within five miles and with a minimum of five orders.
Deserts include cookies, cakes, brownies and cupcakes. The desert menu is called Sweet Addictions and jokingly proclaims “Not responsible for your habits!”
Carson said that the cafe will try to expand on food selections in the future, but are for now sticking with the current menu.
She said restaurants that offer catering along with delivery are going out of style, making Kiss My Grits Cafe stand out among food services.
“You just don’t get that much anymore,” she said.
For more information, visit www.kissmygritscafe.com or call 641-0584. It is located on 310 Third St. in Hayden, upstairs behind Hayden Pharmacy.
