Float Your Boat Race kicks off Saturday morning at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve

PINSON — If you're looking for a place to cool off from the hot summer sun, the folks at the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve have just the thing.

The preserve's third annual Float Your Boat Race and Festival is scheduled for Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Events include toy boat races, one for balsa-wood boats and the other for homemade creations - no bigger than a shoebox (six by 12 inches), and made only of biodegradable materials like wood, cardboard, paper, water-based glue and rope or string, with no plastics, metal or oil-based paints.

Registration runs from 8 a.m. until noon, with a $3 fee per homemade boat. For the balsa-wood boats, contestants can sail ne for $5, a "fleet" of six for $25, or an "armada" of 12 for $50.

Things kick off with an 8-kilometer road race at 8. There will also be a free fun zone with games for children, and the City of Pinson will give away ice cream as part of their Beat the Heat program.

The preserve entrance is located on Narrows Road, just west of Alabama 79.
