NJN/am for Wednesday, August 28

It’s Wednesday, and — hey, is that a camel in the office?…

Weather: We have a trend. Today will be sunny and warm, with highs in the upper 80s, and nighttime lows into the upper 60s. The pattern continues tomorrow.

Birmingham rings the Bell again. William Bell easily won re-election as mayor of Birmingham in Tuesday’s city elections. Bell won with more than 20,000 votes, nearly 10 times as many as his nearest opponent. It will be his first four-year term; he was first elected in a special election to replace Larry Langford, then again in 2011 for a two-year term.

Nothing doing. The Pinson City Council held a special called meeting Tuesday night, and for most of the time went into executive session to discuss the purchase of property. But when they returned to open session, the council immediately adjourned without taking action. Prior to that, the council did authorize Mayor Hoyt Sanders to spend up to $12,000 on a new SUV for the city, which would replace one recently destroyed by a fallen tree; Sanders is looking at a used Chevy Tahoe for sale by the city of Altoona in Blount County.

Sports: Braves win. Elliot Johnson’s two-run triple in the second inning accounted for all the runs in the entire game, as Atlanta shut out Cleveland 2-0 in interleague play Tuesday night. Alex Wood struck out five in 5-2/3 innings’ work; Craig Kimbrel got his 47th save. Meanwhile in the minors, Dan Black’s team-leading 17th home run of the year broke a late tie to give Birmingham a 5-4 win at Pensacola. Cody Puckett also homered for the Barons, who are off today and begin their last regular-season homestand on Thursday night against Montgomery… Tennis: Victoria Duval, who is just 17 but sounds even younger, pulled off the first big upset at this year’s U.S. Open last night with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over 11th seed Samantha Stosur, the 2011 Open champion. Duval playing in just her second Grand Slam event, is ranked 298th in the world and had to play a qualifying tournament just to get into the Open field.
