It's Friday, and The Most Epic Iron Bowl Ever is eight days away – but first we remember the events of 50 years ago today...
Weather: Rain arrives. We have a 50 percent chance of showers today, mainly after noon, with highs in the upper 60s. Rain continues tonight (70 percent chance) with a low in the lower 50s. Rain tapers off through the morning on Saturday, with temperatures falling throughout the day down to the middle 40s by mid-afternoon, then down to the upper 20s at night. Sunday will be sunny and colder with highs in the middle 40s and lows in the upper 20s.
A presidency cut short. It was half a century ago today that President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed as his limousine passed through Daley Plaza in downtown Dallas. The shots were fired from a window in the Texas School Book Depository building, hitting Kennedy and Texas Gov. John Connoly. Kennedy was declared dead at a nearby hospital, while police finally cornered Lee Harvey Oswald in a theater, but not after he also shot and killed a police office in nearby Oak Cliff. Oswald himself was shot and killed as he was being transferred to the county jail.
Getting out of Chapter 9. Jefferson County is now on its way to exiting the second-largest Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy proceeding in U.S. history, thanks to a ruling by a bankruptcy judge late Thursday afternoon. Judge Thomas Bennett approved the plan to refinance the county's debt, and now the county will start to sell warrants for $1.7 billion. An attorney for a group of sewer customers says they will appeal the ruling. The bankruptcy was the country's largest when it was filed, but has since been surpassed by the city of Detroit.
Center Point man charged in burglaries, sexual assaults. Ricky Burgin, 20, was charged with six counts of armed burglary, two counts of sexual assault, one of rape and several other charges related to a string of break-ins over nine months. Jefferson County Sheriff's investigators had been working on the case for months, after they determined that incidents starting in January were linked to one person. He was caught in early September after investigators say he tried to break into an apartment, but was scared away by an occupant; investigators then searched Burgin's dwelling and found items stolen in other burglaries. All the incidents took place in a small area just east of Jefferson State Community College; more charges may be coming.
