GARDENDALE — Mayor Othell Phillips has been re-elected to a second term, turning back a challenge from former councilman Billy Flippo.
Phillips received 1,761 votes, with Flippo getting 1,046.
Two incumbent council members were defeated in re-election bids, and one other will have to survive a runoff to keep her seat. In District 2, Gary Morris lost his seat to teenage candidate Blake Guinn by eight votes. In District 4, incumbent Faith Harper lost to Greg Covert by seven votes. And in District 1, incumbent Peggy Tumlin will face Allen Jerkins in a runoff on October 9, after Jerkins edged Pumlin by two votes with Karen Dunn a distant third. Stan Hogeland easily won the race for an open seat in District 5, while Alvin Currington won re-election in District 3.
