Weather: All eyes on Isaac. The weather is the main news for us this week, as we continue to track the approach of Tropical Storm Isaac to our region. Today will be mostly sunny with highs around 90; nighttime lows will be near 70, and some of the outer bands of Isaac could trigger a storm or two. Those storms will become more likely on Tuesday.
Successive runs of National Hurricane Center models show Isaac moving farther to the west, though the consensus between various models is still a little lacking. For now, it looks like Isaac will make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in southeast Louisiana, then follow an inland path roughly along the Mississippi River. That farther west the storm goes, the less the impact will be on central Alabama; right now it looks like we will see scattered storms along the outer feeder bands and perhaps an inch or two of rain. There’s also the possibility of tornadoes, though they would tend to be of the small, shorter-lived variety and not long-track supercell twisters. Gov. Bentley has issued a state of emergency for all of Alabama, and ordered mandatory evacuations along the coast today. The forecast remains in flux, and we’re keeping track of the latest developments throughout the day.
Storm affects GOP convention. The onset of Tropical Storm Isaac has caused the Republican National Committee to alter its schedule for this week in Tampa. The convention was scheduled to begin today, but instead it will be gaveled into session and then immediately recessed. Speakers scheduled for tonight will be squeezed into the scheduled over the remaining three days. There’s a chance that the convention could be extended to Friday if the storm’s impact turns out to be larger than expected.
Sports: Blue Devils top Rockets. High school football jamboree games were played Friday, and Mortimer Jordan came out ahead of rival Gardendale 21-14 in two quarters of varsity play. Deviln Hodges threw two nearly-identical touchdown passes to Tate Day… Fultondale shut out Corner 14-0 in one varsity quarter, and the host Yellow Jackets tied Hanceville 7-7 in another… Hayden rolled over Locust Fork 34-7 in a full scrimmage game…. Baseball: Tokyp, Japan won the title game of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., routing Goodlettsville, Tenn. 12-2 in five innings. Noriatsu Osaka hot three home runs and a triple in the game…. In the big leagues, the Braves finished with a split of a four-game series in San Francisco, winning 7-1 Sunday behind a strong outing by Tim Hudson. Atlanta had solo homers from Juan Francisco, Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman.
