NJN/am for Wednesday, March 6

Good Wednesday morning to you…

Weather: Hang on to your hat. It will be partly sunny and windy today, with highs near 50 and winds gusting to 30 m.p.h. at times. Chilly temperatures tonight, dipping down to the upper 20s. We’ll start to get warmer tomorrow.

Firefighters deliver. Fultondale firefighters do a lot of things, but Monday morning was a first. Two firefighters delivered a baby boy from a Warrior mom who couldn’t quite make it to the hospital in time. Gina and George Mendiola are now the parents of a baby boy, thanks to the work of William Dellinger and Daniel Harper. The Mendiolas pulled up to the fire station on Walkers Chapel Road, where the firefighters delivered the baby.

Kick starter. With the Publix supermarket project seemingly stalled out yet again, the Gardendale City Council has hired someone to try to get the project rolling. Jack Fields, the former head man of the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center, has been brought in to work with the developer to get the project back on track. Fields played a key role in bringing Walmart to Gardendale.

Sports: County baseball tournament dodges rain. The showers that hit north Jefferson County weren’t enough to wash out the second day’s play in the Jefferson County Schools Baseball Tournament. Gardendale defeated Clay-Chalkville 5-3, with Rocket hurlers pitching a combined one-hitter. Mortimer Jordan slammed Center Point 13-3 in five innings, and Pinson Valley blanked Corner 4-0. Pool play concludes today, with Pinson hosting Jordan and Corner at Gardendale.
