It’s Wednesday — BOO!…
Weather: Frost on your pumpkins? Not likely, as it will not quite be cold enough. But we will see the start of a slow warming trend, with highs today in the middle 60s and lows tonight in the lower 40s. We’ll bump it up a few degrees each day through the end of the week.
Stars fell on Alabama? Well, we’re not sure yet, but it appears that a meteorite may have fallen somewhere in north central Alabama yesterday evening around 5:30. Facebook and Twitter went hot with reports of a fireball-like light streaking across the sky and a sonic boom-like sound. A seismograph in Huntsville registered the boom, and an official with NASA there said it was not a part of the ongoing Taurid meteor shower. It showed up like rain on Doppler weather radar, which likely indicates a disintegrating meteor.
Sandy slows down. The superstorm that devastated much of the northeast is slowly winding down over Pennsylvania. Heavy rain and gale-force winds continue, now reaching the Great Lakes, and blizzard conditions are found throughout the Appalachians. Back in New York, the city is slowly starting to recover from the winds and flooding. Subway service is resuming on a limited basis, airports are opening again, railroad service is back on track, and financial markets are set to reopen Wednesday. At least 30 deaths have been attributed to the storm, and a group of at least 100 homes in the Breezy Point neighborhood of the borough of Queens were destroyed in a massive fire. In New Jersey, the town of Seaside Heights — home to the TV show Jersey Shore — was buried by sand, and part of the Funtown Pier collapsed. Several boardwalks in shore towns suffered damage, including Atlantic City. But just south of AC, Lucy the Margate Elephant — a landmark building that has stood for more than a century — survived, largely unhurt.
Sports: Jefferson jailed. Former LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson is in custody in an East Baton Rouge Parish jail, after a judge revoked his bail on a simple-battery charge from last year. Jefferson was arrested along with three other Bayou Bengal players, including Tyrann “Honey Badger” Mathieu, on marijuana charges last week… NBA: The 2012-23 season got underway Tuesday night with three games. Lebron James had 26 points and 10 rebounds as Miami took down the Celtics 120-107, while Cleveland defeated Washington 94-84, and Dallas upset the Lakers 99-91, despite playing without injured Dirk Nowitzki.
