Friday, Friday, the day for silly Internet songs…
Weather: Be glad you aren’t on the East Coast. The weather will be okay here, with a chance of isolated showers this evening and tomorrow. Highs will top out near 80 today, lows will dip to about 58 tonight, with sometimes gusty winds and a 20 percent chance of rain. But then things cool off quite a bit with weekend highs only around 60, dipping down into the 30s by Monday night. On the coast, Hurricane Sandy will turn inland Monday night or Tuesday morning, and could be a storm for the record books. High winds and torrential rainfall are in store for the Eastern Seaboard, and then as the storm collides with very cold air over the Appalachian Mountains, very heavy snow may fall. Landfall for the eye of the storm could be anywhere from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia to New York City.
Drug money. A study conducted by a pair of UAB students found that dollar bills taken from four different locations in Jefferson County had detectable traces of methamphetamine, with the biggest concentration coming from north Jefferson County. A report by Fox-6 television said that the students sampled sets of 20 one-dollar bills, including two sets from an unnamed home-improvement store in the northern area — the store wasn’t named, but the only store matching the description is Lowe’s in Fultondale. One of the sets from that store had traces of meth on 17 of the 20 bills.
Sports: Rockets roar into playoffs. It was a historic win for Gardendale’s football program Thursday night, as their 43-16 beating of Carver was the 300th win in school history. Jordan Howard scored four rushing touchdowns, and caught an 87-yard TD pass from Hunter Crook. The win gives the Rockets the third playoff seed from Region 6, a remarkable feat considering they lost their first three region games; in two weeks they will play the loser of tonight’s game between top-ranked Hoover and No. 9 Tuscaloosa County… Baseball: After a night of Carlos Sandoval long-ball on Wednesday, the Giants won Game 2 of the World Series 2-0 over Detroit on Thursday by manufacturing runs. A bunt single led to an RBI on a double play in the seventh inning, and then Hunter Pence sent home a run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Madison Bumgarner threw seven scoreless innings for San Francisco. Game 3 is Saturday night… Basketball: David Stern is calling it a career. The commissioner of the NBA announced he will step down in February 2014, 30 years to the day after he took office. When Stern took the job, the NBA Finals were televised late at night on tape-delay, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were just beginning their rivalry, a kid named Michael Jordan was a rookie, and NBA players weren’t even allowed to play in the Olympics. Since then, the league has become a worldwide sensation, attracting players from across the globe and a fan following that is second only to the English Premier League and Italy’s Serie A of soccer.
