Kairos Kafe closes Gardendale location

GARDENDALE — One of Gardendale's most anticipated restaurants has suddenly shut its doors, a little more than six months after opening.

Kairos Kafe, located on Main Street across from City Hall, closed as of Wednesday. The announcement was made by owner James K. Jones on the restaurant's Facebook page. That page had chronicled Jones efforts over the months to find the right combination of menu and operating hours to make the restaurant work, an effort which now appears to have been unsuccessful.

Kairos opened its Gardendale location in April, after prolonged work to put the space in a strip shopping center back into usable shape. Before Kairos moved in, the space had been home to several eateries; it was the longtime home of Max's Cafeteria.

Jones said in his announcement that he would put his efforts now into expanding services at Kairos' original location in Birmingham. That restaurant, which occupies a building next to Interstate 65 that was the longtime home of Ollie's Barbecue, and is shared with a church. In fact, the restaurant is an outgrowth of the church's coffee-shop ministry, which blossomed into the full-time restaurant in 2004. Kairos has been a favorite of downtown diners ever since, which is one reason its Gardendale opening was so highly anticipated.
