— It's Friday, and we're heading into a busy weekend...

Weather: We've said it before. Mostly sunny once again with a high in the middle 80s, with nighttime lows in the upper 50s. The forecast remains the same through the weekend.

Lots of questions, with some answers. The first of two town-hall forums about the proposed new Gardendale city school system drew about 160 residents Thursday night at the Civic Center. Many of them came from unincorporated Mount Olive, where students currently attend Gardendale schools; the community would likely have to annex to become a part of any new system that breaks away from the Jefferson County School System. Mayor Othell Phillips, city council members and consultants hired by the city to study the proposed system fielded questions for nearly three hours, and they will do so again a week from Monday. Here's our full story from last night.

Trafford mayor: I'm outta here. Clint Daniels, who defeated incumbent Robert Niblett in last year's municipal elections, abruptly resigned during a town council meeting Monday night. The town clerk said his verbal goodbye is considered binding. Daniels, when reached Thursday afternoon, confirmed his resignation but would say nothing more – at least for the moment.

A race no one won. A man was seriously injured late Thursday afternoon when he attempted to beat a train at a crossing near Morris. The incident occurred on Happy Top Road not far from its intersection with Morris Majestic Road. The driver was taken to a local hospital, where he is expected to survive, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, which did not release an identity. The crossing over the CSX main line from Birmingham to Decatur and Nashville has no lights or gates; it is guarded only by crossbucks and a yield sign.

Sports: We live for Friday nights. We're in Week 7 of the high school football season, and The NJN Big Game tonight is Shades Valley at Gardendale, where it is also homecoming. We also have Mortimer Jordan at Hayden, Vincent at sixth-ranked Fultondale, Curry at Pinson Valley, Corner at Jemison and Douglas at Locust Fork. In eight-man play, Tabernacle Christian finishes its regular season with a game at Russell Christian in Meridian, Miss.... Baseball: Tigers move on. Justin Verlander had a no-hitter bid broken up in the seventh inning, but he still had a superb night as Detroit shut out Oakland 3-0 in Game 5 of their American League Division Series. They move on to face Boston in the AL Championship Series... Volleyball: Killers. The Jefferson County Large Schools Championship tournament is Saturday at Gardendale, with the host team a favorite to take the hardware. Last weekend,Corner hosted and won the small-school version of the championship. It's the last big warm-up for teams as they move into playoffs the following week.
