NJN/am for Thursday, August 29

Hello, Thursday…

Weather: A little warmer. A sunny and warm day is in store again, with highs in the lower 90s, and nighttime lows into the lower 70s. Scattered showers and storms will return to the forecast on Friday — just in time for football games.

Death for Fort Hood shooter. Major Nidal Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding 30 others in a rampage at Fort Hood, Texas in 2009, was sentenced to death via lethal injection by a panel of officers in a court-martial Wednesday. Nasan, who represented himself during the case, offered no defense during the penalty phase of the trial. He will likely sit on the military version of death row for years — the Army has not executed anyone since the early 1960s, and some have been awaiting execution for two decades.

A “shot across the bow.” President Obama is considering a military strike against Syria for using chemical weapons in the latest round of unrest in the Middle East. Despite criticizing his predecessor, George W. Bush, for conducting similar operations without Congressional approval, Obama may do the same thing — something that is not sitting well with anti-war factions within his own Democratic Party.

Sports: Manziel gets a slap on the wrist. Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel will sit out the first half of Texas A&M’s season opener against Rice as punishment for autographing hundreds of items for dealers. The action was taken by the university with approval by the NCAA, and was roundly criticized by sports-talk types across the country… Baseball: Chris Johnson hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Braves a 3-2 win over Cleveland on Wednesday. Closer Craig Kimbrel picked up the win in relief. In the minors, the Barons begin their final homestand of the regular season tonight, as they play the first of five games against the Montgomery Biscuits.
