Parole denied for David Wayne Camper

FULTONDALE — A Fultondale family breathed a huge sigh of relief on Tuesday.

Phillip and Charlotte Burgett attended a parole hearing for their nephew, David Wayne Camper. They have attended every parole hearing for Camper for the past 32 years.

The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles again denied parole to Camper, who was convicted in June 1979 for the rape and murder of Ruth Matilda Burgett, who was Camper’s grandmother and Phillip Burgett’s mother.

“He got five (more) years,” Burgett said. “They didn’t even blink an eye when they heard our case. They just decided he did not need to be out.”

Burgett said the board could have granted another parole hearing anywhere from one to five years from now.

About 15 friends and family members were in Montgomery for Camper’s hearing, including representatives from Alabama Attorney General Troy King’s office and from Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale’s office.

“I felt relief. Very relieved. The whole family did,” said Burgett. “There was a lot of us crying for joy.”

Ruth Burgett, 63, was murdered at her Fultondale home on Dec. 14, 1978. She was stabbed, beaten and raped.

Camper, who was 18 at the time, was convicted six months later. He received a sentence of life in prison, which makes him eligible for parole every few years.
