It's Wednesday, and we think that “Hump Day” camel on TV is gone for a while...
Weather: Brrrrrr. It's going to be sunny today, but high temperatures will only be in the lower 60s, and lows tonight will dip into the upper 30s for the first time this season. Breezes will keep frost from forming, though. Thursday will be a little warmer.
Hold off on those Form 1040s. The Internal Revenue Service said Tuesday that it will not accept 2013 tax returns until sometime in late January or early February, a week or two later than originally planned. The reason is the recent partial government shutdown, which delayed testing of new software for the coming season. Alas, the deadline for filing tax returns has not changed.
Free IDs. The Associated Press reports that Alabama Secretary of State Jim Bennett is getting ready to provide voter identification cards free of charge for those who don't have another form of ID. The cards will be available at county registrar offices, Bennett's own office in Montgomery, at various senior-citizen service centers, and even in special vans that will travel the state. The free IDs are intended to help voters comply with the new voter-ID laws.
Sports: Rockets win cross country title. Gardendale won the 19th Annual Jefferson County Schools Cross Country Championship on Tuesday at Mortimer Jordan, but their top runner had to survive a foul claim to keep her position and give the team the title. The Rockets, who have been undefeated so far this season, won by three points over runner up Center Point; Corner placed third. Alexa Kauffman of Gardendale was the individual champion with a time of 21:47 over the 5-kilometer course. On the boys' side, Shades Valley edged Pinson Valley by a single point for the title; Luis Gonzalez of the Indians was the individual champ (17:33)... Baseball: The World Series gets under way tonight at Fenway Park in Boston, as the Red Sox host the St. Louis Cardinals. It's the fourth time the two teams have faced each other in the Fall Classic. Adam Wainwright is the starter for the Cards in Game One, while Jon Lester takes the hill for the Bosox. First pitch is at 7:07 on Fox 6.
