NJN/am for Thursday, February 21

Good Thursday morning...

Weather: Rain returns. Showers and thunderstorms move into the area this afternoon, and hang around through Friday night. Highs today in the lower 60s, lows tonight in the middle 50s. Rain chances are 50 percent for this afternoon and 100 percent for tonight.

Magnolia Festival adds road race. Gardendale’s annual festival is adding a 5K race to its schedule for 2013. The Lima Foxtrot 5K run will be held April 27, and will benefit a program of the Lakeshore Foundation that helps injured armed services members rehabilitate through sports. The race will be the first event in the festival, which will be held May 3-4.

Objections noted. The Macon County judge who issued the search warrant that allowed bingo machines at Victoryland to be seized was forced to do so by the state supreme court. Attorney General Luther Strange used a ruling from 1899 to force Macon Circuit Court Judge Tom Young to issue the warrant, who did so with a handwritten objection on the legal papers. Strange had hundreds of slot-machine style games removed from the greyhound race track Tuesday, in yet another battle in owner Milton McGregor’s war with the state over the legality of the machines. Strange also filed suit to have the Poarch Creek Band of Native Americans close their three casinos in Alabama, all of which feature games nearly identical to those seized.

Sports: Duels Day at Daytona. Danica Patrick has her historic pole position in Sunday’s Daytona 500 locked up, and Jeff Gordon also has a spot beside her on the opening grid guaranteed, but the rest of the field will have to go through today’s Budweiser Duels twin qualifying races to make the big race field. The first of the two 150-mile races drops the green flag at 1 p.m. (Speed Channel)… Prep baseball: “Splitsville” again for Pinson Valley, as they win one game over Hueytown 5-4 with a big five-run fifth inning. Zac Ray knocked in two runs with a single in that rally. The Indians then lost 6-4 in the second game, as the Gophers scored two in the top of the seventh to come back.
