GARDENDALE —
The Gardendale Magnolia Festival will add a new event this year — a 5K run that will benefit armed services members who were injured in the line of duty.
The Lima Foxtrot 5K Run benefits the Lakeshore Foundation of Birmingham’s Lima Foxtrot program, which has helped almost 2,000 men and women move forward following injuries by using sport and recreation, according to the Lakeshore Foundation website.
Magnolia Festival organizer Kathleen Phillips said the annual festival supports two charities every year in addition to awarding scholarships to local high school seniors.
“We want to keep adding to the festival events to continue to make Gardendale’s festival great,” she said. “We wanted to choose a charity that was somehow related to our area and yet had enough outreach that the entire state would want to participate.”
Phillips said any Lakeshore Lima Foxtrot participant could either start out the race at the beginning as an honorary runner, or could participate in the full race with all runners.
The 5K is April 27. It begins at 8 a.m. and the half-mile Lima Foxtrot Fun Run begins at 9 a.m. Both events start at the Gardendale Civic Center.
The fee to enter the 5K is $20, or $25 the day of the run. The fee to enter the fun run is $5 or $10 the day of the run.
Runners can pick up their packets at the civic center April 25, 3-9 p.m.
Awards will be given for the top male and female overall, and for the top three males and females in each age bracket.
Runners can register online at www.magnoliafestival.org.
The race is a kickoff to the Magnolia Festival, which is May 3-4 at the civic center.
This year’s festival features more than 200 vendor booths, three stages with live entertainment, a classic car show, and three eating contests sponsored by Bud’s Best Cookies, Buffalo Wild Wings and Hamburger Heaven.
For more information about the 5K or the fun run, call race organizer Jeanne VonHagel at 542-0467.
