Kidnapping attempt thwarted. Fultondale Police arrested a man from Doraville, Georgia on charges he tried to kidnap a minor last Thursday. Bruce Edwin Barton was caught in front of a HVAC business on Tarrant Road in Gardendale, after police say he tried to abduct a minor in the parking lot of Winn-Dixie. The whole event lasted just half an hour from the kidnap attempt to the capture of Barton.
Sports: Opening Day. High school baseball teams took to the diamonds Monday to begin the 2013 season. Mortimer Jordan swept its traditional opening-day doubleheader at Oak Grove, while Gardendale split a tri-series at Mountain Brook, defeating Benjamin Russell while falling to the host Spartans. Pinson Valley and Fultondale also split their first two games. Softball also got underway for the Indians, who beat Clay-Chalkville… Soccer: A young, scrappy Fultondale boys’ team put a scare into host Gardendale in the first 15 minutes of their contest Monday night, but the Rockets regained their composure and earned a 3-0 victory. It was the first game the two neighboring schools have played against each other and the first win for new Rocket coach Josh McIntosh. Meanwhile, the new Wildcat girls’ team played its first game ever, falling to the Rockets 7-0… Basketball: Dr. Jerry Buss, who bought the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979 and saw the team win 10 NBA championships, died Monday at age 80. Buss had been undergoing cancer treatment for a year and a half.
