A new president has been selected for UAB. Dr. Ray Watts, the dean of the School of Medicine, was elected by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees, after a favorable recommendation from Chancellor Dr. Robert Witt. Watts is a native of Birmingham, and replaces Dr. Carol Garrison, who stepped down in August.
The bunker where Jimmy Lee Dykes held a 5-year-old boy hostage is being excavated. Authorities have already dug their way around the stairs leading to the hatch that served as the doorway to the underground bunker. Dykes was killed in a firefight with FBI agents on Monday. The boy, now 6, was rescued largely unharmed. Dykes was accused of also killing the driver of the bus from which the boy was abducted.
A student at McAdory Middle School in McCalla may be charged in family court for bringing lancet-style needles to school, where five other students were stuck with the needles. Jefferson County Sheriff Chief Deputy Randy Christian said the needles are typically used to test blood-sugar levels, and the children who were stuck are not in any risk.
