NJN/am for Friday, February 8

Good morning and a happy Friday to you…

Weather: Morning rain. A line of showers comes through this morning, but clears out around lunchtime. Highs will be in the upper 50s, lows tonight near freezing. Saturday will be sunny, but Sunday will see more showers and thunderstorms with occasional heavy rain. Highs both days are in the lower 60s.

Gambling-bribery defendant sentenced. Carl Scoggins of Gardendale, one of six people who have pleaded guilty to charges related to the FBI investigation of illegal gambling and bribery in Kimberly, will serve nine months in prison followed by nine more months of home detention. His sentence was handed down in federal court Thursday. Scoggins will also have to pay a $7,500 fine and get his GED. Scoggins used to own a convenience store in Warrior; his home is now in foreclosure, and he runs a barbecue stand near Sayre.

A bizarre “manifesto.” A statewide manhunt is in place for a man who was fired as a Los Angeles police officer who is accused of killing three people. Christopher Dorner left a long, rambling manifesto on his Facebook page, which threatened police with further slayings —  and also praised CNN personality Anderson Cooper, actor Charlie Sheen, presidents Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush  and New York Jets reserve quarterback Tim Tebow. Authorities found Dorner’s burned-out pickup truck near the resort town of Big Bear, and overnight put the town effectively on lockdown.

Sports: Everyone’s a winner. All seven local AHSAA girls basketball teams won their first-round games in area tournament play Thursday night. Gardendale did so in dramatic fashion — down by four points to start the fourth quarter, they completely shut out Huffman in the fourth as they came back to win 54-38. All teams will play in area championship games on Saturday, except for Pinson Valley which plays their on Monday against host Center Point… Prep wrestling: The post-season begins as well this weekend, as sectional tournaments are held. Locally, Gardendale hosts a Class 6A final, while Mortimer Jordan and Pinson Valley travel to Homewood in 5A and Hayden goes to Arab. In the 1A-4A sectional, Fultondale goes to Tallassee. Top wrestlers move on to the state finals in Huntsville next week.
