Gardendale Council continues donations to local schools

GARDENDALE — Gardendale schools are now a little better off financially, thanks to a big donation that came this week.

The city of Gardendale donated a total of $25,785 to four schools.

On Monday during a city council meeting, Mayor Othell Phillips presented checks to three principals: Jeff Caufield of Gardendale High, Neal Underwood of Bragg Middle and Ellen Andrews of Gardendale Elementary School.

He had previously given a check to Snow Rogers Elementary principal Laura Ware because she could not be at Monday’s meeting.

The donation was to replace funds that the state formerly gave to schools before being forced to cut back spending due to proration.

Phillips said the donations amounted to $135 per classroom.

Caufield, speaking for all of the schools, thanked the city for the donation and for also supporting the schools through the various city departments. He said he would like to see the positive relationship continue between the city, the schools and the community.

“We’ve never had a better group of principals than we have in place now,” said city council president Stan Hogeland.

In other business, the council:

• approved an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation, stating that the city will maintain Memorial Park off of U.S. Hwy. 31. Parks and recreation interim director Dale Hyche said the agreement is to update the city and the state’s records regarding the park, which is located on the state right of way.

• appointed Virginia Jones and re-appointed Robbin Phillips to the Planning and Zoning Board

• hired Wendy Wilson as a public safety dispatcher for the police department

• heard from resident Mike Quick, who asked the city for help regarding the intersection of Sugar Ridge Road and Fieldstown Road. He said the intersection is dangerous and said he has seen numerous car wrecks at the intersection, including one involving his family members. Mayor Phillips told him that Fieldstown will be repaved soon, and that the project will include re-striping and other work at the intersection to make it safer.
