UPDATE: Severe weather threat for Wednesday; all schools delay opening

All local schools have delayed opening Wednesday by three hours, thanks to a threat of severe weather in the morning hours.

All of north and central Alabama will be under the gun for the threat of severe thunderstorms, including the possibility of tornadoes, beginning in the overnight hours and continuing through midday.

As of 6:15 a.m., the National Weather Service had an active tornado warning for Cullman County for a radar-indicated tornado near Cullman. Others had previously been issued for Walker and Winston counties for other radar indications..

A line of strong storms stretches between Tuscaloosa and Huntsville, with individual storm cells capable of dropping funnel clouds. Heavy rains will accompany the storm system. As it passes, temperatures will drop from the middle 60s down into the 40s, and then near the freezing mark that night.

Tornadoes have struck along this system in Tennessee with deaths reported in Mt. Juliet, a community just east of Nashville.
