Weather: A chill in the air. Another sunny but cold day is in store, with highs only in the middle 40s. Lows tonight fall to the upper 20s. Wednesday will be a shade warmer, and then clouds roll in Wednesday night ahead of a front that will bring in chances of rain on Thursday.

Four more years. President Barack Obama’s second term began Monday with his ceremonial inauguration, held before hundreds of thousands at the U.S. Capitol. In his speech, Obama indicated he would continue to pursue his Democrat social agenda, including state-sponsored health care, same-sex marriage, increased gun controls and attempts to check climate change. Obama’s speech left little indication of a willingness to compromise with Republicans, as noted by conservative Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., who said, “I am hoping that the president will recognize that compromise should have been the words for today, and they clearly weren’t.”

Missing man’s car found. Blount County Sheriff’s deputies found a car belonging to a Locust Fork man who was reported missing last Friday. The unoccupied car of Raymond Wournell was in the water at Low Water Bridge, a series of culverts on the Locust Fork of the Warrior River that often are flooded when water levels are high. The bridge is about 2½ miles north of the town of Locust Fork. Wournell was reported missing after not showing up for work in Birmingham last week. No search for him in the river has begun.

Starting from page one. The Gardendale City Council will take up a proposal to completely rewrite the city’s zoning ordinances in March. A synopsis of the new 207-page proposal was given a first reading at Monday night’s regular session. The overhaul is the first in many years, and consolidates a patchwork of changes over that time, plus addresses new types of businesses and structures that have developed since then, as well as eliminating numerous redundancies. The full document will be available for viewing at City Hall, the Martha Moore Library, on the city website in a few days, and also in a legal advertisement in The North Jefferson News. A public hearing over the new plan will be held March 4.

Sports: County hoops tournament time. The top teams in both Jefferson and Blount county school systems are being determined this week. Action in the large-school boys division started Monday afternoon at Hueytown, with Clay-Chalkville defeating Gardendale 53-43; it’s the third time in four meetings that the Cougars have beaten the Rockets. Clay will face Minor in the semifinals, as the Tenacious Tigers beat McAdory in overtime. Gardendale plays the Yellow Jackets in the consolation round Thursday. The small-school boys’ bracket starts today, with Fultondale playing Corner at 3 p.m., followed by Mortimer Jordan against Oak Grove. Girls tourney action gets underway at Shades Valley with a full slate of games. Meanwhile, the Blount County Tournament tipped off at Cleveland, and Hayden’s boys emerged victorious in the first round against Susan Moore by a 46-42 score. The Wildcats face a stern task in Thursday’s semifinal, as they play top seed Locust Fork. Girls’ play starts tonight, with third-seed Hayden playing Appalachian at 6:30, with the winner to face Locust Fork on Friday.
