The weekend is almost here!
Weather: Scattered thunderstorms will start the day, but will pretty much be done by mid-morning. Highs will be near 70 and the nighttime low near 60, with more showrs and thunderstorms coming in just after midnight. That batch of showers should end about lunchtime Saturday, but Sunday should be sunny all day. Temperatures will be in the 70s this weekend, with lows near 40.
Money and munchies. Gardendale police have apprehended three men, after one of them robbed the Dollar General store on Mt.Olive Road Wednesday night. Police said the robber made off with cash plus candy and crackers, then sped away in a car with two other men. A policeman spotted the car going south on I-65 and gave chase, finally catching the car when its tires blew near Forestdale. Identities and charges are expected to be released today.
Local school registration information (other schools have not yet submitted their details):
• Mt. Olive Elementary will hold kindergarten and new student registration for the 2014-2015 session on April 8. Registration for kindergarten and first graders coming from private kindergarten will take place on April 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the office. The following items will be required: Student’s certified birth certificate (not the hospital copy), proof of immunization (blue card), Social Security card, custody papers if needed, two forms of residence verification (utility bill, lease and mortgage statement) and driver license.
• Registration for K5 in Bryan Elementary School is April 3 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Bring the following items: birth certificate, Social Security card, blue immunization form from the student. From the parent you will need to bring two proofs of residence and drivers license. There will be a registration packet to fill out the day of registration.
Sports: Movin' on up. Hayden and Mortimer Jordan each moved up a notch in the Alabama Sports Writers Association's Class 5A softball rankings this week.The Wildcats, fresh off a third-place finish at the Gulf Coast Classic II tournament in Gulf Shores, is now ranked second, and the Blue Devils are now fifth. But both are still behind Area 12 foe Curry, which remains in the No. 1 spot. In Class 4A, both Corner and Locust Fork made the also-nominated list... At a tournament in Springville, Gardendale defeated Pisgah, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, by a 5-0 score in five innings. Cris Gant pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out 10 batters. In their second game, the Rockets fell to Albaertville, the No. 7 team in 6A, by a 7-1 score in six innings. The Aggies scored five runs in the first inning and knocked out Rockets' starting pitcher Jordan Smith; Gant relieved her and struck out nine the rest of the way.
