CENTER POINT —
Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies responded to a house fire in the 400 block of Woodland Court NE in Center Point just before 10 p.m. Monday night. Center Point Fire and Rescue Service was on the scene when deputies arrived and told them that there was a man trapped in the house.
One resident had escaped the fire and told deputies that he had been in the basement of the home watching television and heard a popping sound from upstairs. When he went upstairs, he discovered the kitchen was on fire.
He had a friend staying with him who was asleep on a couch in the living room. He woke his friend and told him they needed to get out. As they started to the door the friend turned saying he had to get something from the bedroom and went back.
The resident left the house and did not see his friend again. No one else had been inside the residence.
When the fire was extinguished, the body of the male victim was discovered on the bedroom floor.
The victim’s name is withheld pending the notification family.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but is believed to have been due to food left cooking on the stove.
