GARDENDALE — It's not unusual for the line at Chick-Fil-A stores to be long, but Wednesday's traffic was exceptional.
Lines at the Gardendale location on Fieldstown road stretched for nearly a block, and customers parked in the lot of a vacant gas station next door as they supported the fast-food chain in a national effort spurred by a former Republican presidential candidate.
"I Support Chick-Fil-A Day" was created by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, in response to criticism of the company's founding family, which has publicly expressed its opposition to same-sex marriage. That stand resulted in public criticism from mayors and other politicians in Boston, Chicago and San Francisco.
Customer traffic has been heavy at nearly all of the chain's locations, according to multiple news reports.
