It's Monday all over again...
Weather: Umbrella time. It will be a rainy day today, with showers starting mid-morning. Highs will be in the upper 50s. Showers continue tonight with a low in the upper 30s. Skies clear Tuesday with highs in the upper 50s again, but we could actually see a few flurries or snow showers late Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
A community divided. After opponents of the annexation of Mt. Olive into Gardendale took their verbal swings at local politicians last Tuesday, annexation supporters did the same on Sunday afternoon. And after two hours of back and forth between residents and politicians, State Sen. Scott Beason told the crowd that a legislative bill setting up a vote to annex the area zoned currently for students to attend Gardendale schools would have to be put together quickly. And it can't have any problems, as the coming session of the state legislature won't last long, and bills must be “advertised” for four weeks before facing a floor vote, a time period which resets if even one letter is changed. And the bill would also to be approved by the Jefferson County delegation of lawmakers -- and there's no guarantee of that, Beason said. We'll have a full report on the meeting a little later today.
Two killed in Center Point fire. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said that the deaths occurred in a house in the 1500 block of 26th Street Northwest. The fire broke out around 7 a.m. Sunday. One other occupant was taken to a hospital for treatment, as was a Birmingham Police officer. The names of the deceased have not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Narrowing the search. The Jefferson County Board of Education is expected to reduce the field of applicants for an open seat on the board in a meeting Monday morning. Several residents of north Jefferson County are among the 17 people who have applied for the seat, which was held by Ron Rhodes of Corner, who stepped down in November.
