NJN/am for Friday, August 9

It’s Friday at long last…

Weather: Sounds familiar. More scattered storms are forecast for today, as well as for the weekend. Today’s high will be near 90 with a nighttime low in the lower 70s, and a 60 percent chance of storms this afternoon, 30 percent tonight.

Abortion clinic closed. The New Woman All Women Health Clinic, one of only two abortion clinics in metro Birmingham, was shut down by court injunction Thursday, after Circuit Judge Joseph Boohaker agreed with state regulators that the clinic met the state’s legal definition of a hospital, and was operating without a license. It’s the same clinic that was bombed in 1998 by Eric Robert Rudolph, in which a Birmingham Police officer was killed; Rudolph was also convicted of the Centennial Park bombing during the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996.

Winfrey, Clinton to get presidential award. The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor given to American civilian citizens, will be awarded to talk-show maven and actress Oprah Winfrey and former president Bill Clinton. They are two of 16 people to receive the medal this year, a list which also includes former Chicago Cubs great Ernie Banks, feminist activist Gloria Steinem, college basketball coach Dean Smith, and the late Sally Ride, the first female astronaut.

Sports: Tiger, Lefty struggle. The first nine holes of round one of the PGA Championship, the year’s final major golf tournament, were good to Open Championship winner Phil Mickelson as well as Tiger Woods, but both faltered late in their rounds and finished with 1-over-par scores. They are tied for 50th, six shots back of co-leaders Jim Furyk and Masters champ Adam Scott, in the field at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y…. Football: The Atlanta Falcons are glad it’s just the pre-season, as they were walloped by Cincinnati 34-10 last night in the exhibition opener for both teams at the Georgia Dome… Baseball: It’s never good when you have more errors than base hits, and that’s just what happened to the Barons last night as they dropped a 9-1 decision at Mobile in Thursday’s series opener. Keenyn Walker hit a solo homer for Birmingham’s lone run.

[Editor's note: This story was edited at 12:30 p.m. to reflect that metro Birmingham still has one remaining abortion clinic open after the New Woman All Women clinic was shut down.]
