GARDENDALE — Gardendale Elementary School made north Jefferson County proud recently.
On Feb. 27, the school placed in the top five at the 2010 Elementary Science Olympiad at Jacksonville High School.
More than 650 elementary school students from throughout central Alabama attended the 17th annual event.
Thirty-three elementary and middle schools competed with in the Olympiad, one of the largest elementary-level academic competitions in Alabama.
Nineteen students comprised the team from Gardendale Elementary School.
The Elementary Science Olympiad is comprised of 28 events that test students’ knowledge in life, earth and physical sciences.
Teams also attempt to master science concepts and processes and are put to the test in a number of events in which they are asked to construct contraptions that fly, float or roll for the longest distances.
Medalists from Gardendale include Keller Beason, Scott Conwell, Annie Dial, Ethan Kinnaird, Douglas Moore, Kailey Murray, Cole Payne, Joseph Pounders, David Steedley, Jessica Stokes, Caleb Thomas, Justin Thomason, Joshua Varden and Emma Wilson.
Head coach Jennifer Crumpton led a host of teachers, parents and other volunteers who dedicated hours of extra time to help the student participants prepare for the Olympiad.
The top teams are determined by an accumulation of the individual performances.
Montgomery Catholic School captured top team honors in the 2010 competition.
Calhoun County schools took places two through four with the Donoho School (Anniston) finishing second, Kitty Stone Elementary (Jacksonville) third, and Saks Middle (Anniston) fourth.
Gardendale Elementary (Gardendale) was the top school from Jefferson County, finishing fifth.
Corner (Warrior) placed sixth, Clay Elementary (Clay) seventh, and Paine Intermediate (Trussville) eighth.
