GARDENDALE — Bragg Middle School principal Neal Underwood is leaving that post for a promotion within the Jefferson County Schools system.
Underwood will become the new director of transportation, in charge of the buses that transport schoolchildren each day. His appointment was made official at the Jefferson County Board of Education meeting Thursday morning.
Underwood had served as the top man at Bragg since the beginning of the 2012-13 school year. He replaced Jeff Caufield, who took over as Gardendale High principal after the promotion of Dr. Anna Vacca to the post of deputy superintendent for student support services.
Underwood’s last day at Bragg is Oct. 1; no replacement has been named yet. He replaces co-directors Della Baker and Tico Sanchez. Both will remain with the department, with Underwood as their new boss at the system’s transportation depot in Ketona.
The transportation department was honored by the board Thursday for having no serious mechanical faults in annual state inspections over the last two years. The system has 484 buses, with more than 400 in use daily and the rest as backups.
