S.W.A.T.S. stays shut. Judge Caryl Privett imposed a preliminary injunction Thursday that keeps the controversial sports-supplement company closed through next January. The Alabama Attorney General's staff put five expert witnesses on the stand in yesterday's five-hour hearing. All of them called into question the worth of S.W.A.T.S. products, including its famous spray made from the extract of deer antler velvet. Judge Privett said that reopening the company could pose serious harm to the public, especially young football players this fall who might depend on the S.W.A.T.S. “concussion cap” to help them recover from injury. A trial will be set shortly after the new year.
Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown – but don't bring your scrawny tree. Pinson city council member Joe Cochran had heard enough about the city's rather puny “Charlie Brown Christmas tree” last year, and was determined that the 2013 version would be better. So the council voted in Thursday night's regular session to pay for the services of a company that specializes in holiday decorating. The council will spend $6,900 this year, mostly for new materials, and $2,700 in 2014. The new tree will be much larger, Cochran said, and the company will decorate City Hall as well.
Sports: Week 4. In high school football tonight, the NJN Big Game sees Walter Wellborn, ranked eighth in Class 2A, coming in to play unbeaten Fultondale. Elsewhere: Gardendale travels to No. 7 Vestavia Hills, Pinson Valley hosts Hayden, Corner heads to top-ranked Calera, Mortimer Jordan is at Springville, Locust Fork visits Fairview and Tabernacle Christian plays Tuscaloosa Christian in Cottondale... Baseball: The Braves hope to finally warp up the NL East title this weekend, as they play the Cubs in a series at the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. Friday's game is a 1:20 p.m. start. Atlanta's magic number is two to clinch.
