Weather: Afternoon showers. We’re entering into a typical summertime pattern of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Today’s high will top out around 90, with tonight’s low in the upper 60s. The chance of rain this afternoon and tonight is 20 percent. Friday will be almost exactly like today.
Former Gardendale resident shot and killed. Lindsey Michelle Love, 29, was killed inside her apartment in a Pell City housing project early Wednesday morning. Police there have charged her brother, Brett Love, with killing her; he is lodged in the St. Clair County Jail. Both were formerly residents of Gardendale, according to a source close to the family who did not wish to be named. Details are still sketchy; we hope to update this story later today.
Drone zone. The head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation admitted Wednesday that his agency uses unmanned drones in surveillance on U.S. soil. In testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Robert Mueller admitted it to Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), but said they are used “very seldom.”
Deaths: “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini, who died Wednesday while on vacation in Italy. Gandolfini was best known for his role as mob boss Tony Soprano in the acclaimed HBO series, was the victim of an apparent heart attack; he was 51… Slim Whitman, the country singer with the falsetto yodeling style, died of heart failure at his Florida home. Whitman was long popular in Europe, but didn’t become famous in the U.S. until he was seen in 1980s commercials hawking his albums. He was 90.
Sports: Gotta love the overtime. Hockey fans have been getting a lot of play for their money in this Stanley Cup Finals series, and Wednesday’s Game 4 was no exception. The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Boston Bruins 6-5 on Brent Seabrook’s slap-shot goal near the halfway mark of the first overtime period. The series is tied at two games each; the fifth game is Saturday night… NBA: The season has come down to one game, which tips off tonight at 7 p.m. The Miami Heat host the San Antonio Spurs in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, after the Heat tied the series at three games each with a comeback win Tuesday in overtime.
