— The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for all of central Alabama, and as a result all local schools will be closed on Tuesday.

The forecast now calls for as much as two-tenths of an inch of ice accumulation for a narrow band that includes metro Birmingham, and one-tenth for a wider band to the north and south. An inch or two of snow is also expected through the area, and when combined with the ice, travel conditions are expected to become very hazardous through the region.

The precipitation is expected to begin no earlier than midnight in the metro area.

Jefferson County and Blount County school systems announced closures late Monday afternoon, as did Tabernacle Christian School in Gardendale. Those closures, though, did not affect activities such as basketball games scheduled for tonight, though some of them were moved to earlier times, such as the area championship game between Pinson Valley and Center Point that tipped off at noon.

On top of that, a second weather system will come through on Tuesday night, which could bring another tenth of an inch of ice and as much as three additional inches of snow.

Jefferson County Supt. Dr. Stephen Nowlin said a decision would be made about Wednesday's classes in the late afternoon or early evening Tuesday.

We'll update this story throughout the rest of the day.
